An experience that is more than a journey—it’s a deep immersion into the poetry of a country that speaks directly to the soul.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo, Japan’s capital, is home to about 13 million people and is one of the most populous and influential cities in the world. Originally known as Edo, it became the center of power in 1603 under the Tokugawa shogunate and today stands as the country’s political, economic, and cultural hub. The city is divided into 23 wards and includes smaller cities, towns, and even Pacific islands such as Izu and Ogasawara. Located in the Kanto region, it borders the prefectures of Chiba, Yamanashi, Kanagawa, and Saitama. Despite being the third smallest prefecture (2,187 km²), Tokyo offers striking geographical variety—from coastal plains to mountains reaching 2,000 meters. It’s a major industrial and commercial center with a growing transport network. Landmarks include Tokyo Station (restored in 2012), the Metropolitan Government Building, and the Tokyo Skytree, the tallest communication tower in the world.

From Tokyo to Takayama

Located in northern Gifu Prefecture, Takayama is a historic feudal town known for its traditional wooden houses, uniform in height and beautifully aligned, giving the streets a sense of balance and charm. The town is also famous for its festival, held every spring and autumn. Dating back to the 16th century, it is considered one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. During the celebration, elaborately decorated floats parade through the town, showcasing the region’s masterful craftsmanship.

From Takayama to Kanazawa

A trip to Kanazawa feels like stepping into Japan’s feudal past. Elegant streets lined with stately homes, historic pleasure quarters, a well-preserved castle, and the stunning Kenroku-en Garden make this city one of the most captivating in the country. Kanazawa is also a treasure trove of traditional arts and crafts: Kaga-Yuzen silk kimonos, Kutani and Ohi ceramics, and Wajima lacquerware decorated with gold leaf or powder. The city’s cultural richness is also reflected in its esteemed Nō theater performances and renowned traditional cuisine. For a classic walking or local transit itinerary in Kanazawa, we suggest the following route:

Historic Kanazawa:

  • Oyama Shrine

  • Samurai Residences in Nagamachi

  • Nagamachi Yuzen-kan

  • Kanazawa Castle Park

  • Kenroku-en Garden

  • Seisonkaku Villa

  • Traditional Handicrafts Museum

  • Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art

From Kanazawa to Kyoto

Kyoto served as Japan’s capital for over a thousand years and became the center of the nation’s arts, culture, and religion. Today, it is easily accessible from Tokyo in just 2 hours and 40 minutes by Shinkansen, and about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Kansai International Airport. In the city center lies the Imperial Palace, known for its minimalist architecture (guided tours available with reservation). Nearby is the more ornate Nijo Castle, once the Kyoto residence of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Gion district, close to Shijo-Kawaramachi, is the perfect place to experience traditional theater and enjoy local cuisine in refined restaurants that reflect the elegance of classical Japan.
